Exercise and rehabilitation in injury management

Keeping active is important in injury management. Many years ago people with back pain, for example, were recommended to go on bed rest until the pain settled. However, we now know this makes back pain outcomes significantly worse. After an initial brief period of resting if things are severe, it’s important to keep active and find movements you can do within a relatively pain-free range. Getting back to performing activities of daily living tasks and work sooner improves your long-term recovery and reduces the risk of ongoing chronic pain.

What is exercise rehabilitation?

Exercise rehabilitation can take many forms including stretching/flexibility, mobility, functional movement, strength exercises, weight lifting, bodyweight resistance, cardiovascular exercise and stabilisation. Each one has different situations where it may be preferable over others and may be suitable for your goals or particular injury.

At Pivotal Osteopathy, we can give you tailored advice and work with you to develop a program that suits not only your needs but your preferences for exercise. We have patients that love to do a lot, and patients that prefer to do less. We can design a program to appropriately progressively load your body to provide the best conditions for injury recovery as well as keeping it practical to fit into your daily life.

Exercise rehabilitation is tailored for you and your situation

With the COVID-19 situation and access to gyms and group exercise centres being restricted, we acknowledge that learning ways to be able to perform exercises in your own home with minimal equipment is really important right now. We can show you how to use what you have, or use minimal equipment until such time as you are able to get back to accessing other services again. We have found Telehealth consultations particularly helpful in exercise prescription and progression when patients haven’t been able to come in for face-to-face osteopathic appointments either due to isolation or government imposed restrictions.

The osteopaths at Pivotal Osteopathy have extensive experience in guiding patients through the rehabilitation process of many different injuries and surgeries, in addition to being able to provide hands-on Osteopathic manual therapy treatment to help manage pain, tightness and stiffness.
